Where to Start
So you're new to gardening. The most difficult task is to figure out where to begin. This is where you can find help.
Knowing where to begin in gardening is similar to any other endeavor you may wish to pursue. The most important factor you need to know is where do you want to end up?
-
Are you growing to provide your family of four with food?
-
Do you want to be able to make certain foods such as salsa or stir fry?
-
Do you just miss the taste of fresh garden peas like you had from grandma's garden?
Each of these scenarios calls for a different plan of attack. If you want to grow so you and yours can be completely sustainable, you may need a larger space. If you just want peas, perhaps a container garden initially is your best bet. It's easier to get discouraged in gardening than encouraged, so make sure you think out a plan before you start.

PLANTS & VEGETABLES
Often you will hear, "if you want to know what to grow, go look in your kitchen." This is sage advice. Do not grow eggplant if you will not use eggplant. Try to make a list of items to grow that include what you want and what you are already consuming. Now, from that list you may be able to choose some items that are easier to grow than others. Herbs, for example, are known for being easy to grow, and thus can build confidence in any new gardnerer (along with the most amazing pasta sauce made from fresh parsley).
